What is a pancake holster?

A pancake holster is an Outside the Waistband (OWB) holster design that is worn on a belt, close to the body. Typically it is made of two pieces of leather stitched together on both ends and molded, holding the gun in between. It may have two or three belt slots, where the belt going through the slots pulls the holster tight against the body, making it a good option for OWB concealment.

What types of gun models your pancake holsters are suitable for?

Pancake holsters are suitable for most semi-autos and revolvers. They work well with full size pistols like Colt / Kimber 1911, Beretta 92, Sig P220 / P226, most medium to large frame GLOCK models as well as revolvers like Smith & Wesson K / L / N frame with 4 barrel. Pancake holsters are also ideal for heavier, large frame guns like Desert Eagle, Taurus Judge, S&W Governor, or revolvers with 6 barrel as the weight is better balanced on the belt. They are also appropriate for concealment with short barrel guns like BERSA 380, Walther PPK, Colt Officers, KAHR, GLOCK 42 / 43 / 26 / 27 and S&W small J or K Frame revolvers.

What are pancake holsters made of?

Pancake holsters can be made with a variety of materials: leather, kydex, plastic, padded nylon fabric, etc. Many shooters express discomfort with hard materials like kydex or hard plastic. Leather is the best material for Pancake style as it is more comfortable with the Pancake holster pressing against the waist. Leather also conforms better to the gun frame and your body shape over time with use, like a leather baseball glove. What are the advantages of using a pancake holster?

Pancake style is one of the best OWB holster designs that balance comfort, accessibility, safety and concealability. Worn on a belt on the strong side, the weapon is easily accessible. The drawing motion required does not put bystanders within the sweeping range of the barrel. The belt pulling from both ends helps keep the holster close to the body, making it more concealable while also making it harder for an attacker to grab the gun. Ease of re-holstering is one slight drawback to Pancake holsters as it tends to collapse after drawing, this makes it less suitable for competition shooting.
