What is a shoulder holster?

Shoulder Holsters are designed to carry the weapon between the arm and the torso, attached to a harness which is suspended over one or both shoulders. The most common and popular designs involve a harness that goes over both shoulders, and magazine or speedloader cases on the opposite side of the gun to help balance the weight of the firearm. Depending on the design, the weapon may be carried Horizontal (barrel pointing back) or Vertical (barrel pointing down).

Can I use a shoulder holster for different types of handguns?

Shoulder holsters are made for a variety of semi-autos and revolvers. They are available for full size pistols like Colt / Kimber 1911, Beretta 92, Sig P220 / P226, most medium to large frame GLOCK models and revolvers like Smith & Wesson K / L / N frame with 4” barrel, as well as short barrel guns like BERSA 380, Walther PPK, Colt Officer’s, KAHR, GLOCK 42 / 43 / 26 / 27 and S&W small J Frame revolvers.

What are shoulder holsters made of?

Shoulder holsters can be made with a variety of materials: leather, kydex, padded nylon fabric, etc. Many shooters express discomfort with hard materials like kydex. Padded nylon shoulder holsters can be bulky and they cannot be molded for a specific gun. Leather is the best material for Shoulder Holsters as it is more comfortable with the holster leaning against the torso and under the arm. Leather is not bulky and it conforms better to the gun frame over time with use, like a leather baseball glove. Master’s Shoulder Holsters are made from top grain cowhide leather high quality hardware, offering high level of comfort, safety, and functionality and concealment.

Are gun shoulder holsters suitable for concealed carry?

Shoulder holsters can be an effective concealment option with the right kind of clothing like a jacket or a coat. Leather is the preferred material for concealment because it is not bulky like padded nylon materials and more comfortable than hard materials like kydex. Vertical shoulder holsters present a better concealment option for guns with longer than 3” barrel as they prevent the long barrel from printing behind under clothing. For short barrel guns, horizontal shoulder holsters are perfectly fine for concealment.

When should you not use a shoulder carry?

For concealment purposes, Shoulder holsters require a jacket or a coat. In hot climates or in summer heat, wearing a jacket or a coat may not be practical and light or tight clothing may not be enough to conceal the rig.

Shoulder holsters may not be the best choice for quick draw as they often come with a retention mechanism like a strap and a snap that need to be released to access the firearm. Also, reaching for the gun under a jacket or a coat may slow down the drawing process.

Finally, Shoulder holsters may not be the best carry option in crowded places because the wide range sweeping motion required to draw the gun from a position where the barrel is pointing behind (or down) to pointing it forward may create a high safety risk to bystanders.

How should I position and adjust a shoulder holster for optimal comfort and concealment?

Optimal comfort and concealment is highly dependent on the shooter’s personal preferences as well as physical build and ability. Luckily, most shoulder holsters come with an adjustable harness for a customized fit. It is important to experiment with different adjustment settings and practice drawing an unloaded gun to find the optimal adjustment based on personal preferences and abilities.
